Patrick O’Neill is a research-based multidisciplinary artist born and raised on the traditional, unceded and ancestral territories of the Coast Salish peoples - the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), Stó:lō and Səl̓ílwətaʔ/Selilwitulh (Tsleil-Waututh) and xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam) Nations (Vancouver, Canada).
He received his MA in Contemporary Art Practice (Critical Practice) at the Royal College of Art, London UK. He works with performance, video, writing, sculpture and installation to create unwieldy containers of thought that critically examine the construction of the “self” and the mind-body relationship.
His most recent body of work centred around the anxieties and ecstasies of the unknowable, specifically through the lens of historical psychiatric practices, notions of madness, and magic. He uses humour, playfulness and the absurd in the making of his work to to interrogate the ways in which the perception of our bodies are used in the production of knowledge.
